Well, What can one say about Roboquad,I have been putting him through his paces and I must say that he is a ball of fun and so many interesting moves, I just love the guard stance where he rears up on all fours mutters some garbage and is then on alert until you move or get close to him. The demo move is quite hilarious going through his stuff. He also responds well to his surroundings the IR works very well and the light sensor does it's job when you switch the lights out and back on. As for walking on the carpet brilliant could not fault it, On a slippery surface like lino or tiles there is a bit of slippage but can be fixed with the addition of rubber tips on his feet,Do not use rubber tips on carpet as this will cause a load on the servo motors. The display of lights he has is also very good and eye catching. One thing I did notice is that you should keep your fingers clear of those articulated legs, they have a bit of force behind them and could give you a nasty pinch. I have taken some pics and a short video which I will post soon.
Straight out of the box.
Those menacing eyes.
Doing it's thing on the carpet.
Another carpet shot.
Diagram of sensors.
I have dissected Roboquad ready for my first hack, a change of animation LEDS from red to high power blue, will also change the outer eye LEDS to blue. Below the IR led I will fit a led bargraph for the mouth.
Closer view of main board.
IR led eyes, below is where I will insert the led bargraph for the mouth.
The far right and left leds will also be changed to 10-15000mcd blue LEDS.
Darker shot to show detail.
The six eye LEDS. two outer most will be changed to blue.
One side of the eye LEDS.
IR lenses behind circuit board for IR LEDS.
Darker shot to show detail. Mods will take place this week depending on availability of the blue 15000mcd LEDS. I will probably link the mouth bargraph to the blinking eyes left and right split.
I have started my Roboquad eye hack, The first LEDS to go are the outer eye one's and to be replaced with these.
White 16000 mcd LEDS
Old LEDS removed.
New LEDS fitted, Just have to cut of the leads.
Removing the 4 annimation LEDS [RED]
Just have to cut the wires and replace with 8500mcd blue LEDS.
Next mod is to install a mouth, this is going to be tight as there is not much room to install these LED bargraph type LEDS. These are 8000mcd green and are going to be connected to the various eye LEDS matched as an equal pair so as the eye LEDS flash the mouth LEDS move from the center out. I will attack this one in the next few days, Pics up when finished.
Finally got the LED hack done, I have used two yellow 8,000mcd leds for the sides two 8,000 blue for the front and rear and two white 16,000mcd leds for the two outer eyes. Everything works fine and no hicups.
Yellow annimation LEDS
Blue LEDS in the front and back of roboquad.
Yellow annimation LEDS on the side of roboquad, Just soldered in place.
This is showing the front annimation blue and white right eye LEDS.
Another shot showing front annimation blue and white right eye LEDS.
Mouth led hack to come next.
Here are a few pics of my mouth hack for roboquad.
The main CPU
Two wires soldered to the spkr plug.
CPU showing PC1 where the TRY_ME connection is.
Another shot slightly darker of PC1 TRY_ME connection.
Roboquads neck area where two pairs of wires have to be threaded through, quite tricky as there is not much room.
Parts of the lower neck base which have to be removed in order to thread wires through.
Area showing head servo motor, Again wires have to be threaded past the motor.
Two pairs of wires threaded through [tricky job]
Face area where a 5mm hole has been bored for 8,500mcd blue mouth LED.
Check out the two small holes drilled in plastic for LED legs.
LED leads through the holes in plastic.
LED mouth in place.
The two pairs of wires [mouth LED] [TRY_ME connection] terminated via a plug for easy access.
Head back together with LED and wires ready to be soldered.
Almost back together, will finish of tomorrow and post pics of finished mods.
